Historical Society of Carroll County Box Lunch Talk: Ten Tanneries

Following an investigation of the Shriver Tannery at Union Mills, speaker Samuel Riley turns to a larger discussion of tanneries in Carroll County with a focus on the ten tanneries in the area between Sam’s Creek and Union Mills in 1820 in an HSCC Box Lunch recorded Sept. 20. According to the 1820 census, those tanneries processed more than 7,000 skins and hides into leather, an important product that was produced locally until the early 20th century.
