Former Francis Scott Key football standouts earn Academic All-America status

The Eagles have 5 Class of 2022 players on High School Football America's Maryland Academic All-America list.

Football practice for the 2022 season is almost here, but the 2021 postseason accolades are still being doled out.

Five recent graduates from Francis Scott Key are part of a Maryland Academic All-America list from High School Football America.

To be considered, a player had to be a contributing member of a varsity football program in 2021 and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Nick Diehl, defensive back -- 65 tackles (4 tackles for loss), 3 interceptions, 1 forced fumble, 1 defensive TD

Jaeden Heiser, defensive back -- 39 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery

Ryan Rill, wide receiver -- 23 receptions, 517 yards, 22.5 yards per catch, 6 touchdowns

Jarren Rutter, defensive back -- 52 tackles (5 tackles for loss), 1 sack, 1 forced fumble

Austin Schemm, defensive back -- 50 tackles (2 tackles for loss), 1 fumble recovery

I added some statistics for each Academic All-America pick from FSK, and the state's list consists of 30 players.

And while we're at it, take a look back at the Eagles' postseason victory over Carroll County rival Winters Mill from last November, when Key hosted a playoff game for the first time in 15 years.
