Three Carroll County football teams gearing up for regional second-round playoff games
The games have been relocated to Howard County schools for use of artificial turf fields.
Liberty, South Carroll, and Westminster are into the second round of the football regional playoffs, but the schedule has undergone a major tweak to get ahead of the expected bad weather hitting the area Friday.
The Lions, Cavaliers, and Owls were each preparing to host postseason games on Nov. 11. But all three of those those games have been moved to Howard County schools for use of artificial turf fields. Such is life in Carroll, and we can save the turf fields conversation for another blog.
For now, let's take a look at the playoff matchups set for this Friday and Saturday.
Edgewood (8-2) vs. Westminster (9-1)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Where: Mount Hebron High School
Region: Class 3A North
Outlook: The Rams are coming off a 49-0 victory over Patapsco in their first-round game. Edgewood lost to Bel Air in Week 9 but rebounded in a big way -- senior running back Isaiah Megginson and junior receiver Michael Lee should be focal points for the Owls this week. Meanwhile, Westminster QB Kyrece Walker has 15 rushing TDs and 17 passing TDs. Westminster handled Aberdeen in its playoff opener last week 50-0.
Boonsboro (7-3) vs. South Carroll (8-1)
When: Friday, 7
Where: Glenelg High School
Region: 2A-1A West
Outlook: Boonsboro dropped three in a row to end September, but the Warriors haven't lost since. They have won 5 straight games and outscored opponents 155-34. They'll be facing the Cavs (coming off a first-round bye) in the regional playoffs for the second time in as many years. South Carroll shut out the Warriors 35-0 in the second round of the playoffs in 2021 en route to making a state finals appearance.
Williamsport (7-3) at Liberty (7-3)
When: Saturday, 6
Where: Marriotts Ridge High School
Region: 2A-1A West
Outlook: The Wildcats and Lions are playing for the first time since 2018, according to MaxPreps all-time history records. And, Liberty is a perfect 10-0 against its Washington County foe. The Lions took care of Francis Scott Key last week, 49-6, while Williamsport defeated Winters Mill 41-21 to advance.
