Where we stand with Carroll County fall sports winding down

The regional postseason is in full swing and there are several county teams still playing.

Just wanted to show you what we put together this past weekend after the first round of the football regional playoffs, which saw three teams win in convincing fashion to set up three home games for the second round. More on that later.

First, let's set up which fall sports county teams are still alive in the hunt for state championships.

NOTE: Volleyball is a few rounds behind, so I'll post again when the county has some regional champs to crown by week's end.

Girls Soccer

It's South Carroll in Class 1A and Century in Class 2A playing in state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 12. The Cavaliers (9-5-2) face Allegany at noon at Linganore High School, while the Knights (13-3) take on Sparrows Point at noon at Gaithersburg High School.

The Cavaliers rolled past Chesapeake Science Point and Western Tech by identical 10-0 scores, then defeated Loch Raven 2-1 on Nov. 1 and ousted Brunswick 2-1 on Nov. 5 in the 1A quarterfinals.

The Knights have posted three shutouts in the playoffs, including a 4-0 win over Queen Anne's in the 2A quarterfinals. Century has won five games in a row and South Carroll has won four straight.

Good timing for SC -- the Cavs were 1-4-1 in October before heating up in the postseason.

South Carroll hasn't reached the state semifinals since 2006; Century is back for the fourth time in seven years in search of a fourth state crown and first since 2013.

Field Hockey

Carroll has four teams playing in state semifinals -- Westminster plays on Nov. 9 in a 3A semifinal, Manchester Valley plays on Nov. 10 in a 2A semifinal, and Francis Scott Key faces South Carroll on Nov. 10 in a 1A semifinal.

The Owls take on Crofton at 7:30 at Glen Burnie High; Man Valley gets Kent Island at 5:30 at Paint Branch; and the Eagles and Cavaliers play at 7:30 at Glen Burnie.

The state finals are set for Nov. 12 at Stevenson University. The 4A game is up first at 11 a.m., followed by 1A at 1:30 p.m., 2A at 4, and 3A and 6:30.

Football

We've advanced to the regional second round, and three Carroll squads are each one win away from playing in the state quarterfinals. All three are slated for Nov. 11.

Liberty (7-3) hosts Williamsport (7-3) at 6:30 p.m. in 2A-1A West, which also features South Carroll (8-1) hosting Boonsboro (7-3) at 7 at Parker Field.

Westminster (9-1) hosts Edgewood (8-2) at 7 at Ruby Field in a 3A North matchup.

We're planning to have another special broadcast of "Friday Night Football," so stay tuned for more details in the coming days.
