Comeback win paves way for Westminster girls hoops

The Owls are going after a Carroll County Athletic League title with Manchester Valley and Westminster tied in the loss column atop the standings entering the week of Feb. 7, 2022.

It took a rally to get there, but Westminster avenged its only Carroll County Athletic League defeat of the girls basketball season by getting past Century on Feb. 4. And in doing so, the Owls remained in step with the Knights in the county championship chase.

Abby Kindle's game-high 22 points helped Westminster to a 47-42 win in Eldersburg. Taylor Speigle added eight points and anchored Westminster's defense during the second half.

The Owls won their third game in a row and improved to 11-3, and 6-1 in the CCAL. Westminster has a three-game week coming up, with games Feb. 7 against Francis Scott Key, Feb. 8 against Liberty, and Feb. 12 against city rival Winters Mill.

The Owls play Man Valley (16-1, 8-1) on Feb. 16 in Manchester, and again at home Feb. 21 to close out the regular season.

Westminster and Manchester Valley are no strangers to contending for county titles. The Owls won most recently in 2018 and 2020, while the Mavericks claimed the crown in 2016 and 2017.

Century (12-4, 6-4) led by eight points at halftime but couldn't hold on Friday night against Westminster. Mia Graff scored 20 and Eva Brandt grabbed 14 rebounds in defeat.
