Regular season winding down for Carroll County hoops teams

We've got less than two weeks remaining in the high school basketball regular season, so let's break down what has happened and what's still to come for Carroll County's teams.

Girls Basketball

The Carroll County Athletic League title remains unclaimed, with Manchester Valley and Westminster vying for the championship. The Mavericks (18-2) are atop the county standings at 9-1, with the Owls (14-4) right behind them at 8-2. 

The county rivals haven't played yet this season, but that's about to change. Man Valley hosts Westminster on Feb. 16, and the Owls get the rematch at their place Feb. 21.

If the Mavs win on Feb. 16, they'll capture the county title for the first time in five years. Should Westminster win this week, it has a chance to win a county crown for the second time in three seasons.

Boys Basketball

Century (17-2, 10-1 CCAL) locked up its fourth straight Carroll County title when the Knights defeated Liberty 70-63 on Feb. 11 in Eldersburg. Century has won now seven county championships since 2014, and this year's team took an 8-game winning streak into this week.

Century has to play Francis Scott Key one more time this season, but the Knights have the better winning percentage in Carroll County play so that outcome can't factor into the championship race. The Eagles (15-4, 7-3) are one of the hottest teams in the county these days, so that second matchup, set for Feb. 21 in Uniontown, figures to be a good one.

Wrestling

Congrats to South Carroll following the Cavaliers' Class 1A state dual-meet tournament championship, which they won Feb. 12 at North Point High School in Waldorf. South Carroll had little trouble during its postseason duals run -- the Cavs went 5-0 and defeated their opponents by a combined 297-67, and a handful of those allowed points came via forfeit.

Capturing a state duals title was the missing piece for South Carroll's program resume. The Cavaliers last reached a state duals final in 2005 before completing the mission this season.

Expect to see plenty of South Carroll over the next three weekends, with county, regional, and state individual tournaments on the schedule.
