Breaking down the Carroll County Athletic League lacrosse standings

A look at how the boys and girls lax teams are faring as the schedule hits mid-April.

Hard to believe the last regular-season play date for boys and girls lacrosse is less than three weeks away, but here we are.

Such is life during the spring high school sports season, a jam-packed portion of the calendar. Carroll County Athletic League championship chases are starting to really take shape. So let's take a look at the lacrosse standings after some pivotal games have recently taken place.

Boys Lacrosse

Century (3-3) leads the pack at 2-0 after getting past Manchester Valley 11-5 on April 12. The Knights played a pair of tournament games on April 9, going 1-1 with a win against River Hill and a loss against nemesis Glenelg (the Gladiators beat Century in 2019 to win the Class 2A state title).

There's a big game on tap next week when Century travels to Westminster (4-3), which is 1-0 in the CCAL after beating Francis Scott Key 14-0 on April 12. The Owls are on a similar path after splitting two tourney games April 9 (beat River Hill, lost to Glenelg), and they have dealt with a rash of injuries to several top players.

Winters Mill (2-4) is next in the county standings at 2-2, with Liberty (3-3), Manchester Valley (2-5), and South Carroll (2-3) all tied at 1-1. FSK (0-5, 0-3) is still looking for its first win.

Tied with Century atop the standings at 2-0 is Westminster (5-1), which took down FSK on April 12 and won a third straight game. The Owls visit the Knights on April 19 in another big girls clash.

Liberty (5-2) is 2-1 along with Man Valley after the Lions enjoying a three-game win streak last week. Liberty defeated Oakdale, Francis Scott Key, and Winters Mill -- led by senior midfielder Val Thompson, the latest CMSportsNet Athlete of the Week.

South Carroll (3-5) picked up its first CCAL win of the year after beating Winters Mill 16-8 on April 12. The Cavs were balanced on offense and played some good defense along the way.

Francis Scott Key (2-2) and Winters Mill (0-5) are still without a county win. But there are a few more weeks to go in the regular season, and nothing is decide just yet.
