Carroll County winter sports standings taking shape

BOYS BASKETBALL

Liberty tops the standings here as the calendar approaches mid-January. The Lions are on a 7-game winning streak heading into their Jan. 13 home matchup with Westminster. Also looming is their first meeting with rival Century, set for Jan. 17 at Liberty HS.

A quick programming note: CMSportsNet will be covering the Knights-Lions tilt next Tuesday with a special "Game of the Week" broadcast, akin to what we did during the fall sports season with CCAL football. 

Century and Manchester Valley are tied for second in the county standings, and the Mavericks have the tiebreaker given their 64-53 victory over the Knights on Jan. 6. MV coach Chris Wunder celebrated the program's first win over Century -- and a first victory over brother George Wunder, the Knights' longtime coach.

The rematch is set for Jan. 31 in Eldersburg.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Francis Scott Key is out in front and the Eagles have lost just once since Dec. 6. FSK won the county crown back in 2019 (Key's first title since 1987), and this year's group is motivated to add another one.

South Carroll is playing well so far this winter and the Cavaliers are in second place. They ended a 2-game slide last week with county victories over Winters Mill and Liberty, and they host Century on Jan. 13.

The Cavs meet Francis Scott Key on Jan. 18 in Winfield for their first of two regular-season games.

WRESTLING

Once again, it looks to be South Carroll's world with the rest of the wrestling region living in it. The Cavaliers are unbeaten in duals, just as they were last year en route to winning a state championship.

Man Valley gets a crack at South Carroll on Jan. 24 in Winfield, and the Cavs already have CCAL wins over Winters Mill and FSK.

The last few Mavericks-Cavaliers duals have been competitive and exciting, so expect more of the same when they square off later this month.
