Century girls soccer clinches another county championship

Century High School's girls soccer team made sure its streak of Carroll County Athletic League titles didn't come to an end this fall.

The Knights defeated Westminster 2-0 on Oct. 17 to finish their regular season unbeaten against county competition. Century went 6-0 in CCAL play and outscored Carroll teams 17-3 along the way.

The Knights won their fourth straight county title and 12th in program history -- only one of them has not been an outright championship.

Century and Liberty were the top two teams in Class 2A West Region 1 entering play this week, which means the Knights and Lions are going after top seeds. County girls soccer fans know it was Liberty that got the best of Century in last year's regional playoffs. I would expect nothing less than another matchup in the 2022 playoffs, which are set to begin Oct. 26.

Speaking of playoffs, Westminster was a No. 3 seed in Class 3A East Region 1 going into the week, and Manchester Valley was sixth. Winters Mill was sixth in 2A West Region 1, by the way, going into Week 7 of the season.

In 1A North Region 1, South Carroll was third and Francis Scott Key was fourth. 

Liberty defeated South Carroll 4-1 on Oct. 18 and improved to 7-5, 4-2 in the CCAL. Hannah DeVincent had a goal and two assists for the Lions. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers tied Brunswick 3-3 on Oct. 17 before falling to Liberty. SC is 5-4-2, 2-3-1 in the county.
