Checking on the Carroll County Athletic League standings for basketball, wrestling
Holiday tournaments are on tap next week for many county winter sports teams.
We've reached late December, which means holiday tournament action for many winter high school sports teams. The regular season is in full swing now, so before Carroll County's teams reach their winter break let's take a look at the standings and see which squads have made some early statements.
First up is wrestling, where South Carroll is off to a hot start once again. The unbeaten Cavaliers went 8-0 last weekend at the Musselman Duals in Inwood, West Virginia.
Westminster and Winters Mill are each 1-0 in county play, and a few more CCAL duals are scheduled for Dec. 21. Manchester Valley hosts the Owls, and Francis Scott Key hosts Liberty.
CMSportsNet is set to bring you the Man Valley-Westminster dual, so check back for coverage and highlights from Manchester.
Sticking with wrestling before we shift to hoops -- the latest Athlete of the Week is South Carroll freshman Joseph Gigliotti, who is 11-0 on the season with 10 pins as of Dec. 20. Gigliotti went 8-0 at the Musselman Duals, along with many of his teammates.
We caught up with Joseph this week for a video interview. Check it out below.
Onto girls basketball now, and Francis Scott Key has won three games in a row to assume first place in the CCAL standings. The Eagles visit Liberty on Dec. 20 (CMSportsNet will be there!).
Man Valley is 2-1 in the county and the Mavericks are off to a 5-1 start ahead of hosting their two-day holiday mixer Dec. 27-28.
South Carroll and Westminster are both 1-1 to open their Carroll County slate.
In boys basketball, Liberty, Westminster, and Winters Mill are all off to 1-0 starts in the county. Century, the reigning Carroll County champ, hosts WM on Dec. 20 for the Knights' first county clash of the season.
Liberty hosts FSK on Dec. 20 as the Eagles look for their first win of the season and the Lions try to get to 4-2 overall.
