David Cunningham taking over as Francis Scott Key football coach
The Winters Mill High School grad has been an assistant with the Eagles for the last few seasons.
Ryan Kimble didn't have to look very far in making his first big hire as the new athletic director at Francis Scott Key High School.
The Eagles' football program was without a head coach after Will Thompson recently stepped away from the role he occupied for the past three seasons. Kimble has filled the spot with someone familiar with Key -- David Cunningham is the new varsity coach.
Cunningham, 31, served as an assistant last fall and coached running backs and linebackers. He was FSK's junior varsity coach in 2020.
"Throughout our search ... the consistent theme that reoccured when researching Coach Cunningham was how he was a relationship builder, someone our players and community believe in and will play hard for," Kimble said via email. "Coach Cunningham motivates our student-athletes to strive for more. I could not be more excited about our new varsity football coach."
Francis Scott Key went 7-4 last season (3-3 in the Carroll County Athletic League) after starting 5-0, and hosted a playoff game for the first time in 15 years.
Thompson went 11-16 in his three seasons as coach. Cunningham becomes the 12th varsity football coach in school history.
“Over the last couple years, I like to think I’ve really made an impact with the kids and I want to keep everything rolling,” Cunningham said in a Carroll County Times article dated April 8. “This is a great community, we got great support from the parents, from the administration. I want FSK to continue to grow and be a dominant force in the county.”
