It's about time! Big fall sports games on tap around Carroll County
I'm dusting off the blog chops (it's been a while) and updating you on some anticipated matchups in the coming days.
Greetings! Or, in my case, welcome back.
I know it has been a little while since I posted on here. Where does the time go? Anyway, the 2023 fall sports regular season is about two weeks from reaching a conclusion, and that means it's time to check in on the Carroll County Athletic League championship standings.
Let's not waste any more time!
Girls Soccer
Century is 5-0 in CCAL play and the Knights can wrap up a fifth straight county title with a win over Liberty on Oct. 10. The Lions are 3-1 in the county, but can also clinch a county crown if they win their remaining two games against Carroll foes. Liberty has Century on Tuesday and South Carroll on Oct. 19.
Century is on an 8-match unbeaten streak with a 7-0-1 record since its lone loss against Mercy back on Sept. 12.
Here is the latest CMSportsNet Athlete of the Week -- Century senior Harli Hamlett.
Boys Soccer
It's Westminster and Winters Mill on Oct. 10 at Winters Mill HS in a huge county tilt. The Owls and Falcons are both 4-1 in the CCAL. But, Manchester Valley awaits the result as well.
The Mavericks are done with county games and they posted a 5-1 record. They defeated Winters Mill (7-0 on Sept. 19) but lost to Westminster (3-2 on Sept. 28). So, if the Falcons beat Westminster then Man Valley takes the county crown based on the head-to-head tiebreaker.
But if Westminster beats WM, the Owls earn the county title because of their win over MV.
Manchester Valley last won a Carroll County championship in 2018, and Westminster last won in 2016.
Here's our recent highlights package from a pair of important boys soccer games from last week.
Football
Winters Mill (6-0, 4-0) and Westminster (5-1, 3-0) are atop the CCAL standings as we head into Week 7. The Falcons needed overtime to dispatch South Carroll last Friday, while the Owls cruised past Francis Scott Key.
The city rivals are set to face off in Week 9 on Oct. 28 at Ruby Field in Westminster.
Liberty sits at 2-1 in the county, with a loss against Winters Mill. The Lions face the Owls on Oct. 20 after visiting South Carroll this coming Friday.
Winters Mill is 6-0 for the first time in school history, and last week marked Matt Miller's 100th game as Falcons coach.
Check out the highlights from WM and South Carroll in their Week 6 overtime thriller!
