A milestone for Century in 'Wunderland'

CMSportsNet winter high school sports recap for Jan. 18, 2022.

The final buzzer sounded and the loose basketball bounced high off the court -- right into the hands of Century coach George Wunder.

Fitting for the only coach in Knights boys basketball history to come up with the ball seconds after his team held off rival Liberty 63-57 on Tuesday to take over first place in the Carroll County Athletic League standings. A win that gave Wunder his 300th career victory in the process.

Andrew Marcinko led the Knights (10-2, 5-1 in the county) with 28 points and made 11 of 13 free throws. Century outscored Liberty 19-7 in the third quarter to establish a lead it would never relinquish after the Lions were up 30-25 at halftime.

Brent Wehland added 14 points and John Pavlick scored 10. Marcinko handed out four assists as well, and Pavlick grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. Wehland added seven boards.

Tyler Downs led Liberty (9-3, 4-2) with 21 points and Shane Stewart scored 17.

Century has been the county's model of consistency for the last 10 years or so. And Wunder, who started as Knights coach when the school opened in 2001, has led the way. Century is 300-152 all-time after Tuesday's win.

Wunder hasn't had a losing season since 2006-07 (Century had five in a row to start its varsity program). Century has seven seasons with 20 or more wins, on its way to another one this winter by the look of things.

The Knights are 176-59 in their history against Carroll County opponents with seven county championships, including four in the last five seasons.

Check out our highlights from the Century-Liberty game, another exciting chapter in their rivalry, along with postgame interviews with Century's Andrew Marcinko and coach George Wunder.
