Some girls history from the Carroll County Wrestling Championships
The annual event took place Feb. 18, 2023 at Westminster High School.
I wanted to share some interesting facts in the aftermath of the Carroll County Wrestling Championships that took place last Saturday at Westminster High School.
The county tourney carried with it the usual excitement and fun atmosphere, but in reality many of the finals matches were non-competitive. The cream really did rise to the top for both the co-ed and girls tournaments.
I listed the county champions in a blog post earlier this week, but I didn't delve into the history-making aspects on the girls side.
So, here goes.
Let's call Manchester Valley's Summer Shackelford the best girls wrestler in Carroll County history. I don't think that's hyperbole, either.
When she defended her 120-pound crown on Feb. 18, in doing so she earned county title No. 4 for her high school career. That's a first for county girls grapplers.
Shackelford won at 127 pounds in 2020, and added a lightweight county title in 2021 (there were 2 brackets for girls that year, lightweight and heavyweight).
So, Shackelford can say she's the first 4-time county champ on the girls side. All others will follow in her footsteps.
Case in point -- there have been only 15 co-ed wrestlers who have earned 4 career titles at the county tournament.
Anyway, Man Valley's Katie Martin is a 3-time county champion. Martin first won in 2020 at 132 pounds, and she has back-to-back titles at 155.
MV's Bella Canby (125, 140), Faith Day (100, 110), and Layla Lagunas (105) each have 2 county crowns, as does Winters Mill's Roan McCauley at 235.
Congrats to all of the Carroll County wrestling champs as they head into the regional tournaments. Those who move onto states will do so March 2-4 at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro.
CMSportsNet will be there to get highlights from the co-ed and girls state finals -- I'll go ahead and make plans to see some of the county's top wrestlers competing on the evening of March 4.
Stay tuned! Now, here's the most recent CMSportsNet Athlete of the Week: Century boys basketball standout Andrew Marcinko, who has a chance to reach 1,000 career points during the regional playoffs next week.
