What's remaining for Carroll County's boys and girls lacrosse teams

There's one week to go before the regional playoffs begin for spring high school sports across Carroll and the state.

The high school lacrosse postseason begins at the end of next week, with regional seeding set to take place Monday, May 9. By then, Carroll County's boys and girls teams will know which opponents stand along their path to a state championship.

But before everyone begins the playoffs, let's take a look at what is still ahead of each county squad in the final days of the regular season.

Boys Lacrosse

CENTURY

Record: 8-4, 5-0 Carroll County Athletic League

What's left: The county champion Knights visit Liberty on May 2 and C. Milton Wright on May 7. Century built a 7-game winning streak that included an 8-3 victory over Francis Scott Key to clinch the CCAL crown before losing to Mount Hebron 11-4 on April 29. These Knights lean heavily on defense, and so far it's working out quite well -- they've allowed double-digit goals just three times this spring, and surrendered 26 goals in their first 5 county contests (5.2 goals per game).

FRANCIS SCOTT KEY

Record: 0-10, 0-5 CCAL

What's left: One home game this week, May 3 against Boonsboro, before facing Pikesville on the road May 5. While the Eagles are still searching for their first win, and offense has been hard to come by, first-year coach Connor Brown said last week he is seeing progress with his young team. Francis Scott Key Key held its own with Century on April 29 before falling behind for good in the fourth quarter.

LIBERTY

Record: 6-6, 1-3 CCAL

What's left: Two county games remain, May 2 at home against Century and May 5 on the road to take on Manchester Valley. It has been an up-and-down spring under first-year coach Steve Fabian, whose offense relies on Jesse Jason and Jackson Wright to carry the bulk of the scoring load. Still, the Lions have a chance to finish .500 in county play.

MAN VALLEY

Record: 4-8, 2-3 CCAL

What's left: The Mavericks host Bel Air on May 3 and Liberty on May 5, and they too have a shot to get to .500 in CCAL play. Man Valley sat at 4-5 after a win over Francis Scott Key on April 19, but it hasn't won since. Two of those games were close, however -- a 5-4 defeat against Winters Mill and a 7-3 setback against Westminster.

SOUTH CARROLL

Record: 4-6, 3-3 CCAL

What's left: South Carroll gets a home game May 3 against C. Milton Wright and another one May 5 vs. Frederick. The Cavaliers held their own in county play this spring, losing by one goal to county champ Century and falling short 9-6 against Westminster. Expect the Cavs to be battle-tested when the playoffs resume next week.

WESTMINSTER

Record: 9-6, 4-1 CCAL

What's left: The Owls have back-to-back games to open the week, May 2 against city rival Winters Mill (at Ruby Field) and then May 3 against Patterson Mill on the road. Westminster is playing well right now, going 3-0 last week on the heels of losing in overtime to Century. Injuries have plagued the Owls this spring, but several players have filled in those holes adequately.

WINTERS MILL

Record: 4-5, 3-2 CCAL

What's left: A 3-game week on tap. First up is Westminster on May 2, then it's a road game at Havre de Grace on May 3, and a home game May 5 with Harford Tech. Winters Mill has been trading wins and losses, and ended last week with a victory against private-school foe Gerstell.

Now, let's take a look at the CMSportsNet highlights from that Century-FSK boys game from April 29 that gave the Knights their second straight Carroll County championship.

Girls Lacrosse

CENTURY

Record: 12-0, 5-0 CCAL

What's left: Home games with Liberty on May 3 and C.M. Wright on May 5, and with two wins the Knights can put a bow on a second consecutive unbeaten regular season. It's tough to find too many holes on this nationally ranked team (USA Lacrosse Magazine), with an offense led by powerhouse players such as Anna Hackett, Lauren Hackett, Caroline Little, and Jasmine Stanton.

FRANCIS SCOTT KEY

Record: 4-5, 0-5 CCAL

What's left: On the road May 3 to face Boonsboro, then home against Pikesville on May 5, and back on the road for Winters Mill on May 6. The FSK-WM game will give one of those teams its first county win of the year, just before the playoffs are set to begin. The Eagles have looked solid against their non-county competition, going 4-0 and outscoring them 74-12.

LIBERTY

Record: 7-5, 2-3 CCAL

What's left: First up the Lions play Mount Hebron on the road May 2. Then it's a second go-round with Century is May 3, and that matchup counts in the county standings. The rivals met in a tournament title game April 16, with the Knights prevailing 11-9. Liberty is looking for a little playoff momentum after sitting at 6-2 but losing three of their next four.

MAN VALLEY

Record: 11-1, 5-1 CCAL

What's left: At Bel Air on May 3 and then it's a regular-season wrap for the Mavericks, who locked up second place in the CCAL standings thanks to a 14-10 win over Westminster on April 29. Their lone blemish is a 13-8 loss against Century on April 12. Since then, Man Valley has allowed 5.3 goals per game.

SOUTH CARROLL

Record: 6-6, 3-3 CCAL

What's left: A road game at C.M. Wright on May 3 and another one May 5 against Frederick. One more win can ensure a non-losing season for the Cavaliers, who have been led on offense all spring by standout Shannon McTavish and freshman Leah Miller. South Carroll enters the week having won 4 of its last 4 games.

WESTMINSTER

Record: 10-3, 4-2 CCAL

What's left: One more regular-season road contest, set for May 5 against Franklin. First-year coach and Owls alum Jocelyn Jamison already owns a 10-win season, and Westminster's schedule has been a challenging one that should have the 2-time state champs poised for a playoff push.

WINTERS MILL

Record: 0-10, 0-5 CCAL

What's left: Home against Havre de Grace on May 3, and home against FSK on May 6. The Falcons had a road game May 5 against Hammond, but it has been canceled. It has been a struggle for first-year coach Jess Wynne, with Winters Mill's offense still looking for its first double-digit goals game of the season.
