Which Carroll County winter teams fared well over the holidays?

Happy New Year everyone!

Before we shift focus to 2023, let's go back and check in on the holiday tournament portion of the winter high school sports season. Almost every county team was in action, so I'll just go through them alphabetically by sport and you can see who fared well before ringing in the new year.

Boys Basketball

CENTURY

The Knights (6-1) went 2-0 at the Liberty Holiday Tournament, beating Marriotts Ridge 73-62 on Dec. 27 and Rockville 74-61 on Dec. 28. Andrew Marcinko had 34 points against the Mustangs (17 for 20 from the free-throw line) and dropped 29 on the Rams the following night. Ben Chenoweth added 19 points for Century, and Marcinko earned all-tourney honors. 

FRANCIS SCOTT KEY

The Eagles (0-8) dropped a pair of games at the 175 Classic (Meade HS). FSK lost to Hammond 59-35 on Dec. 27 and fell to Catonsville 49-25 on Dec. 28. Jordan Fulmore led Key with 17 points against the Golden Bears and scored 11 against the Comets.

LIBERTY

The Lions (6-2) also went 2-0 at their home holiday tourney. Liberty defeated Rockville 81-52 on Dec. 27 and took care of Northwest 67-48 the following day. Phil Sackett scored 20 against the Rams and Tyler Downs collected 23 points in the Jaguars game. Downs joined Cam Hodges on the all-tournament team.

MANCHESTER VALLEY

The Mavericks (2-3) split a pair of games at the Winters Mill Holiday Tournament. Man Valley lost to Sherwood 59-31 on Dec. 27 but came back to beat Howard 47-32 the next day. Will Cuneo had 7 points and Braylen Williams had 6 rebounds against Sherwood, and MV got 11 points apiece from Carter Strohman and Brendan Luddy against Howard. 

SOUTH CARROLL

The Cavaliers (1-6) earned their first win of the season after losing Dec. 27 against Urbana at the Liberty tourney. SC lost 70-48 before beating Marriotts Ridge 70-50 on Dec. 28. Owen Scott scored 24 against the Mustangs and Micah Puckett added 12. Scott landed on the all-tourney team.

WESTMINSTER

The Owls (3-4) went 1-1 at the Oakland Mills Holiday Tournament. Westminster beat Gerstell 66-61 on Dec. 27 but lost to the host Scorpions in the title game. Micah Ozgar had 16 points and Chance Byrnes added 10 for Westminster against OM. Jah'sir Donald netted 20 in the win over Gerstell (Caleb Franze led the Falcons with 23 points).

WINTERS MILL

The Falcons (2-5) lost on Dec. 27 at their home tourney when Seneca Valley beat them 54-36, but they rallied to clip Harford Tech 59-57 on the next day. Dallas Johnson had 10 points against Seneca Valley, and Kandi Mkpasi scored 12 in the victory over the Cobras.

Girls Basketball

CENTURY

The Knights (4-2) went 1-1 at the Williamsport Holiday Tournament. Century defeated Wootton 53-38 on Dec. 27 but lost to Williamsport the next day, 44-34, in the final. Mia Graff had 17 points and 10 rebounds against Wootton, and Harli Hamlett scored 16. Graff went for 14 and 10 against the Wildcats.

FRANCIS SCOTT KEY

The Eagles (7-1) kept their win streak alive with two victories at their home tourney. FSK beat Smithsburg 53-34 and took down Catoctin 56-34, avenging their only loss of the season so far. Ally Mathias had 14 points and 9 rebounds against Smithsburg, and Drew Watkins posted 16 points against the Cougars. Mathias added 15 points and 14 rebounds.

LIBERTY

No games

MANCHESTER VALLEY

The Mavericks (7-1) went 2-0 at their home tournament. Man Valley beat Hammond 51-42 on Dec. 27 and then defeated Walkersville 47-31 on Dec. 28. Emma Penczek collected 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 steals vs. Hammond, and Carmaya Bowman posted 14 points and 7 rebounds vs. the Lions.

SOUTH CARROLL

No games

WESTMINSTER

The Owls (7-1) won a pair of games at the Oakland Mills holiday tournament Dec. 27-28, beating Bowie 46-26 and downing the host Scorpions 63-58. Carlie Rosewag and Juliana Lesher had 10 points each against Bowie, and Abby Kindle went for 21 points against Oakland Mills. Lesher netted 17 in that win. Kindle earned tourney MVP honors, and she joined Maddy Gassman on the all-tourney squad.

WINTERS MILL

The Falcons (1-6) lost to River Hill 50-25 on Dec. 27 at their home tourney, then fell to Glenelg 48-31 on Dec. 28. Lauren Costello led WM with 9 points and Carli Vogel added 7.

Wrestling

CENTURY

The Knights competed in the Jeff Yingling Memorial Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29. JT Ferguson and Nick Ellis (220) earned individual titles and Century placed fifth out of 10 teams.

FRANCIS SCOTT KEY

The Eagles had a pair of champs in Bodey Griffin (160) and Gabe Dell (195), and finished fourth in the team standings at the annual Jeff Yingling Memorial Holiday Tournament.

LIBERTY

The Lions went 6-4 at the Westminster Duals on Dec. 28-29. Dylan Ohler went 10-0 at 132 pounds, Alex Pearl went 9-1 at 120, Kevin Poole went 8-2 at 152, and Dylan Rubin went 8-2 at 195.

MANCHESTER VALLEY

The Mavericks placed first at the Westminster Duals by going 10-0 over the two-day event. Travis Green went 10-0 for the Mavericks, as did Derek Martin. Brayden Vandervoort and Jake Boog each posted 9-1 records and  Cru Boog finished 8-1.

SOUTH CARROLL

The Cavaliers placed first at the prestigious Trojan Wars tourney at Chambersburg High School in Pennsylvania. South Carroll had 3 finalists and one champion in Gage Owen (139) and totaled 162 points for the team win (there were 30 teams in the field). Rylan Moose (172) reached 100 career wins during the tourney, and SC had runners-up thanks to Michael Pizzuto (145) and AJ Rodrigues (160). 

WESTMINSTER

The Owls posted a 4-5 record at their Westminster Duals home event, and Randy Green finished at 9-0 record over the two days.

WINTERS MILL

No tournament
